This late Maya city was founded about 1007 A.D. One time it was as important as Chichén Itza and Uxmal, being the capital of a Maya confederation which included those cities. Before 1200 AD Mayapán defeated both Chichén Itza and Uxmal but then a revolt in the mid 1400s caused the city to be abandoned.
