Mayapan - The Maya Confederation

This late Maya site was founded about 1007 A.D. One time it was as important as Chichén Itza and Uxmal, being the capital of a Maya confederation which included those cities. Before 1200 AD Mayapán defeated both Chichén Itza and Uxmal but then a revolt in the mid 1400s caused the city to be abandoned.

A huge population within walls

Mayapan is one of a few walled Maya cities. The site itself is considered a minor site for travel and tourism but it is a well worth a visit. Mayapan has several impressive features. Circular buildings are somewhat unusual. It was densely inhabited by 12,000 people within the 4 square km area of the city.
