The Spanish conquistadores built this caribbean castle in 1652 to protect the entrance to the Lake Izabal from marauding English and Scottish pirates. The pirates burned it in 1686. Finally it was abandoned after the Spanish and English established a treaty to handle the piracy problem in the caribbean sea
