The Tikal National Park in Petén is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the whole world. Over 3000 separate constructions, temples, shrines, ceremonial platforms, houses, ball-courts, terraces and plazas... Over 200 ancient maya stone monuments, sculptures and altars. A must see!
An important ancient Maya site is Uaxactun, also located in the Petén region of Guatemala. The site is made up of several groups of buildings and was occupied between around 500 B.C. to 889 A.D.. One building known as the observatory has a staircase beautifully decorated with stucco masks.
About 30 miles long the river Río Dulce is Lake Izabal´s outlet to the Caribbean Sea. Located at the delta on the north shore is Livingston, a village with the magic of the Garifuna culture. Chill on the beach or party down at one of the frequent, exotic, Afro Caribbean culture festivals and celebrations.
A beautiful but also dangerous place is the old city of Guatemala. The reoccurring earthquakes shook the place often. In 1773 the entire city was destroyed so the Guatemalan people decided to build their capital at a saver place. The antigua capital bloomed to new life and is now UNESCO heritage.
The region around Zunil, Sololá and Quetzaltenango contain many hot sulphur springs. An especially popular destination is located in Fuentes Georginas where you encounter a hot spring spa with sulphur in there. Hence healthy and relaxing. Getting there by steep and narrow paths is sportive, too!
Nowadays the Izabal banana plantation Quirigua flourished around 550 A.D. and 850 A.D.. Some of the best stelae and sand sculptures produced by the Maya culture are located here at the ceremonial plaza. They definitely represent a zenith in culture of the Maya civilization classical period.
Without a doubt the city of Palenque is the most beautifully conceived ancient Maya site. One nicest archaeological site in the world. This relict of the Maya civilization is hidden deeply in the jungles- only partly dug out. The ruins are often shrouded in lacy mists. Huge, mysterious and inspirational.
Once the home of the Itzá this ancient Maya site has some nice recovered buildings. In the various sectors of this ancient Maya excavation place you find all of the important architectural elements of the pre colonial cultures of Mexico: Temples, palaces, pyramids, a ball-court, an observatory and more...
Uxmal in Maya means "thee-times built". This name might be because the pyramid really is built over several times - actually 5 times. This site is one of the most well-known and most important ancient Maya sites. On the north side of the Puuc region the buildings here outshine by beauty.
Mayapán is the so called last capital of the Maya civilization. It is located 40km south of Mérida in the middle of the territory of the ancient maya. A few years ago there was merely no recovered building but thanks to the work of archeologists and their helpers it is today back to life, once again.
Copán is thought to have been the cultural center of the Mayan empire, hosting Mayan leaders that came to visit from all over Central America - Classical period roughly 500 A.D. - 900 A.D. the buildings are adorned with a large number of beautifully carved statues that tell of the Mayan history.
